While the round's duration is a fixed short interval of real time (around six seconds), the player can configure the combat system to pause at specific events or at the end of each round.Ī sequel - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords - was developed by a different studio, Obsidian Entertainment, using an updated version of the Odyssey Engine from the first game. However, the number of actions a combatant may perform each round is limited. Time is divided into discrete rounds, and combatants attack/react simultaneously. The game also allows the player to either be a servant to the light side of the Force or the dark side, using an alignment system that tracks actions, from simple dialogue choices to major plot decisions. It uses the d20 System, from the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars Roleplaying Game rules. KotOR is the first computer RPG set in the Star Wars universe. Set 3,956 years before A New Hope, Knights of the Old Republic covers the era just after that of the Tales of the Jedi comics, the time of the ancient Galactic Republic.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic ( KotOR) is a roleplaying game made originally for the Microsoft Xbox and later released for the PC and Mac OS X, also available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Sometimes I want to play a pure Character Action game like Bayonetta or Ninja Gaiden, some times I want an Action RPG Like Dark Souls or the Witcher, and sometimes I want a party/turn based RPG like Final Fantasy/SWKoToR." What greater weapon is there than to turn an enemy to your cause? To use their own knowledge against them?" ― Bastila Shan - Listen ( file info) I mean I’d love to see an RPG that manages to mix good Action Combat with the Strategy of controlling multiple party members and Story, but it seems like 1 of the three of those elements always ends up sidelined.Īlso it’s just nice to have variety and not have every game try to follow the same style of combat as that gets stale. I guess maybe one could argue Souls, Monster Hunter and Dragon’s Dogma are RPGs with good pure action combat, but they’re not Story focused at all. RPGs trying to be more action oriented seem to just have boring combat compared to actual action games, and less strategic gameplay than more traditional RPGs. Dragon Age 2 made the combat more actiony and for the 5 hours I played it it just seemed basic compared to Origins.įinal Fantasy XV is basic as shit and you can just hold dodge and spam warp. It’s a good balance of real time actions and strategy. Dragon Age Origins has great real time semi turn based combat that also let you pause/switch characters/give orders.

The problem I see with making it more actiony is that it seems when RPGs get more actiony, they also get more streamlined and less strategic.
